he said he had lapping tools and could fix it if there was a problem,what ever that means and told be to close the valve and pour gas into it and see if it holds and if there is a seal than its all good



does that sound right

he said the valve wouldn't of bent is there a way to check that

Yes. If its bent or nicked in a critial spot it won't seal.
