    Cam and Valve Springs?

I am picking up a used engine to replace mine since mine is a piece. Engine came out of an auto iX and has 117k miles on it. Upon receiving it I will be changing all the gaskets/seals, clutch, etc. Also will be getting 19# injectors and a MarkD chip. While the engine is out, I thought I should get a cam because it will be easy. Probably gonna get a Shrick 288 from Turner. The question is, should I get shrick's valve springs when I get the cam? Or does it really matter? If I need them, I will either get them, or just junk the cam idea.

Will the Mark D chip take into account the cam?

What are you doing about the oil pan?

Whats Turners price on that Shrick?

You can get any Shrick duration and lift you desire for $325 from TopEnd.

the topend cam I got was basically a regrind of a stock cam..

I'm not sure if a 288 requires beefier valve springs or not, I'll have to look in my shrick manual. I know my 284 doesn't. however I'm not sure if I'd put a wild cam in a completely stock head, I think headwork and better exhaust are a minimum if you want any decent performance out of it. I think for a stock head you'd be better off with a 272.

I am running a Schrick 288 (real-not a regrind) with the factory springs in my '89 325i. It has been in for about a year with no problems yet. Not too many miles on it as it is a track car only - but lots of time spent at the red line. Schrick recommends their springs for the 288 (of course at $336 for a set), but I got really conflicting info from Turner, Korman, and Ireland Engineering on their necessity. The factory springs are dual springs, which are typically an upgrade. You can get a new Schrick from Turner for only $441, so I would not go w/ a regrind for the $115 difference. Plus, you would likely have to run larger eccentrics w/ a regrind.

Funny, I was going to post as part of mine that Heeter would chime in telling him he need not worry about the cam. :D

uneccesary, unless you are building a race motor. new replacements are fine. you can also have them x-rayed for flaws and shot peened for more strength if you want to get crazy.

Decided against the cam idea because instead of just doing it... I would rather be doing it and doing it right and getting valve springs and just redoing the whole head. So... I'm just gonna go for 19# injectors and MarkD chip.
