Easiest Way to Install New Aux Fan

After troubleshooting electrical issues related to my aux fan, I finally got it working correctly last night. That bliss lasted for about about 20 or 30 minutes whereupon the fan motor seized and blew the #3 fuse. So, I am going to be replacing the aux fan.

I have seen some people suggest the aux fan can be replaced without removing the radiator. What is the easiest route? Can I remove it by taking out all my grills and lifting up and out? My car is a 1987 325ic.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Remove the bumper and valance. After that just unscrew and pull.

And will it come out up thru the hole where the grills go or downward?

I just replaced my condenser and aux fan without removing the valence or bumper. I removed the 2 bolts that hold the valence to the body near the bumper brackets and that gave me enough wiggle room to swap fans. The write up is in the last couple of posts in my red Cabrio barn find thread in my sig

            Jeff,

Thanks for your response! It didn't make sense to me that the front bumper needed to come off. It is easy enough to take the front valence off... I am mainly glad I don't have to drain and remove the radiator.

            All the best.

Marc..I did not remove the valance but again, just removed the 2 valance to frame bolts near the bumper shocks to gain 1/4" of flex in the valance. Be uber careful as it is aluminum and will distort if you talk mean to it.

Once you remove the lower spoiler ( 2 ABS pcs on my car), headlight surround and kidneys it will all be accessible

The front valence is not aluminum, it is steel, just like the rest of the body.

hats good since its less likely to deform. Either way it doesnt have to come off

Just to circle back with folks here. I removed my aux fan this weekend by simply removing the lower plastic black valence underneath my 1987 E30 325ic. However, my oil cooler was in the way. By removing a couple of brackets holding the oil cooler in place... you can swing the oil cooler out of the way and the aux fan will drop straight down/out. Unfortunately, I couldn't install my new fan because all three of the mounting bolts (shouldered fit bolts) were boogered up.
