From what i heard you can use most any M50 manifold thats not a full length header but the DOWN pipes need changing to clear the control arm. DONT QUOTE ME ON THIS THOUGH. If im wrong please correct me.

Brian is correct. The down pipes require a little cutting and welding, but any of the stock manifolds work. Get the the M52/S52 tubular style manifolds and create two small block off plates for the OBD-II emission equipment that you won't be using.

What about after market shortie headers like the Bimmerworld ones? WIll they fit with custom down pipes?

make sure you weld the passages between cylinders shut on the back of the header flanges if you use them

Which passages are you talking about? What are they for? And are these only on the stock manifolds?

Don't waste your time with shorty headers, they don't do shit on M/S50's. Stock M50 manifolds are all you need. If you can, get '96-on manifolds, which are stainless, and 8 pounds lighter.
