Do the fuel gauge and the fuel pump have any relations?

Does a slow responding gas gauge indicate a fuel pump that's on its way out?

Reason I ask is because last night, my car started idle very roughly and stalls at every stop. 2 days ago, I filled her up and the fuel gauge, which usually indicates the fuel level immediately, was very slow to respond. Once I filed her up, and I got back into the car and started the car, I saw the gauge indicate about 3/4 full tank and saw the needle slowly creep to full tank over the course of about 10 seconds.

I'm wondering if the rough idle/stalling is an issue with the fuel pump..

The fuel gauge will not indicate when or if your fuel pump is failing.

If its never been replaced, and your car is high mileage, might be worth it to replace it anyway. Don't wanna get stuck on a long trip.

There are procedures to test the pump in the Bentley repair manual.

A slow responding fuel gauge will be the result of a rusty tank. There is a small hole in the bottom of the sensor that bleeds fuel in/out. Rust in the tank can obstruct that hole.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

This last fill-up was the first time I saw slow responding fuel gauge..

As for the stalling issue, I'm gonna replace the intake boot (elbow) and hopefully it will fix the problem...
