    ***HEADWORK***

Right, I have sourced myself a spare head for my 325i Sport which I would like to take apart and clean up.

I then want to do some headwork on it. Is there anything I can do myself by means of porting and gasflowing etc? I've heard that it's not adviseable to smooth out the intake ports. I'd also like to do my intake manifold while it's off.

Would it also be worth changing the valves and cam (big money I know) at the same time. I was thinking Schrick 284\272 but this would involve changing rockers, arms, springs etc etc.

I am having a 2.8 engine built and I would like something that I could use on my sport until the 2.8 is built and then I could swap it over onto the 2.8 as I'm guessing that the 2.8 will have the standard 325 head on it.

I was also thinking of changing the valve seats from 3 to 5 angle, what benefits does this have and is it worth it\easy to do? Also oversized valves????

What are your thoughts on this people? Do you know any guides or websites for polishing the ports myself?

How can I get the head cleaned once I've stripped it of it's internals?

I posted a reply on this on the shit30zone (sorry, e30zone) forum.
It is not a home job, you definately need a flow bench to mod this head.
5 angles on the valves give no extra power, i have them and it is a gimmick from the race track and of no use on a street car.

The only true way of gaining power is to cut the groove around and behing the port like alpina and hartge did in the 80`s.

I've recently become a regular user of the E30 zone and it is very helpful and informative to us E30 enthusiasts!

        Let me explain myself clearly:

The e30zone is a masterpiece, the format is superb in every way, the only thing that lets it down is a couple of the mods and the constant posts full of bollox, informing people of mods that simply dont work.
The amount of people who email me for help after following advice they have recieved on the e30zone is amazing.

Like i said, the format is one of the best car forum formats i have come accross in 10 years but the posts from people who simply know absolutely nothing about cars is shamefull.

There are plenty of people who have not got a lot of money and spend there cash on things they buy for there cars thinking it will work and yet try it only to find out they dont.

Also, the help and advice of repairs is often floored with information banded around that is useless.

Of course this thread will get back to the e30staff who will slander me for my dealings which is fine, but at least when i help people they get exactly that, good, honest and genuine help.

I don't want to get involved in the virtual fighting that's gone on between you and the mods, you stated that the e30zone was shit and I was defending it through my experiences, there are a lot of people that will read this, so let them judge for themselves.

I personally use the E30zone to help others because I think the E30 is a great car and the more we can keep on the road the better. If I don't know the answer I won't post.

P.S. Are you going to Rockingham?

Yes mate, i am (probably have loads of people wanting to string me up)

I understand what you mean about your posts but there are quite a few who post just for the sake of posting and not because they know the answers.

Hey Adam, I think some people will have a lot of advice for you about your goals. There's a lot of very technical aware individuals on this forum.

              Here's a link to a similar thread: http://www.r3vlimited.com/phpBB2/vie...ghlight=valves

Valves - Ireland Engineering used to sell oversized valves. They weren't that much more expensive I believe, but you have to weigh the costs and benefits. With a 2.8i turbo, they might be worth it. Dave Adams did some calculations about the valves. http://www.davelength.net/car/engine.html

also be adding +1mm stainless steel valves, which works out to be a sizable difference in surface area. The existing
seats can be ground to accommodate the increased size. Here is a comparison of area for the valve sizes:

              Diameter Area [pi * (r) * (r)]
              Stock Intake 42mm 1384.74mm2
              +1mm Intake 43mm 1451.47mm2
              Increase +66.73mm2

              Stock Exhaust 36mm 1017.36mm2
              +1mm Exhaust 37mm 1074.67mm2
              Increase +57.31mm2
Dave got them from http://www.vacmotorsports.com/ for $411 as he wrote on his parts page: http://www.davelength.net/car/engine_parts.html
Might as well list all the good sources and suppliers now, and refer to them later.
http://www.davelength.net - Click on the white Mtech Cabrio, and go to his modification articles, lot of good stuff Dave Adam's site
http://www.strictlyeta.net/index.html - great source for 2.8i build, with complete parts list he used. Fred Kim's site.

US shops, but info none the less

there's also some more info on the forum, but there is a good starter!

About cams - Ted liked the 284/272 in his 3.0L (but is going more extreme), and Dave used a 272 in his.

That's a great help Rob and one of the reasons I joined this forum. The technical knowledge seems very good.

informing people of mods that simply dont work
Jay, don't start all this bitching flooding onto another forum. Your opinions are your own, please keep it that way. I am however, curious to know which mods are being sold that don't actually work.

I am not talking about mods being sold, i am talking about constant advice from people who know feck all and pretend to know it all.

Read the tech section, you will come accross many a post full of cack.
You know how good my advice is, you also know all the advice i give is genuine and works.

I am not trying to make trouble, i think as a mod on that forum a quiet word in the ear to some of the people spouting the crap would go a long way to bring faith in the information spouted on the forum.
