    Rear end clunking noise

I'm trying to find the source of a rear end clunk on my 318is. It only happens when going on rough roads filled with bumps or potholes. When we first got the car it had this noise. It had H&R Sports, Bilstein sports, and lifetime rsms. Since then the subframe bushings have been replaced, along with another new set of rsms. I've had three different differentials in this car so that is probably not the issue either (the mount looks good on it as well). Right now, I have taken off the trailing arms to get ready to replace those bushings. The original bushings actually look ok but I have not pressed them out yet. Basically, is there anything else I could check? I feel like everything that could be making this noise has been replaced.

    Thanks

I get clunking noises too, I think this is because my jom springs in the rear are super compressed. What spring are you running now?

I get it too, mine is from running no adjusters with my GC coilover kit in the rear. Only happens at a higher rate of speed with a bump.

I had a clunk on my old car coming from the rear sway bar, one link was broken and maybe the bushings were shot too?

          Check your exhaust hangers.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's starting to look like this may be one of those common e30 things that I just have to live with.

You may be on to something here. My H&R sports are really compressed too.

I had the sway bar mounts tear through the body on my 91 318i with ST sways, needless to say that got pretty loud lol. Made some reinforcement plates and all was good!

I've got the seem problem, when shifting on and off load? Or doing a bad gear change?

                Could be your driveshaft csb.
