Dangling electrical connector in engine bay... what is it for?

So I've been meaning to ask this question for a while... can anyone tell me what the purpose of this little yellow connector is? I have searched around the area looking for another loose connector; but no luck. I have an '86 eta.

Orange stuff is usually air bag related.

Did cars in 86 even come with airbags? I thought it was only 89 and up? Or was it available in 86, just not standard?

It's a unused diagnostic plug. It's in all E30's If I remember correctly.

It probably isn't airbag related since there isn't an airbag. The diagnostic plug sounds like my best bet unless someone has a better suggestion.

What kind of diagnostics? I know it also has an OBD port...
