    Fuel tank only half capacity

I have a late model car with the pump in the RH side and the "sender" in the LH side.

I'm having an issue with the fuel tank only accepting half the capacity. I can only put 22L into the tank before it spills out of the filler. The gauge only reads half the tank.

I think it is only using the RH side of the tank.

How does the siphon work? What does that "sender" unit in the LH side do?

Some late models came with a drug smuggling hole built into the driver side rear bench area. Great for storing narcotics, not great for storing gasoline.

I think that was a 'dealer' installed option?

The level sender on the LH side just tells the fuel gauge in the cluster how full the LH part of the tank is. There is another sender built into the pump on the RH side. If the tank is full but reading half empty, one of the two senders is bad. There is a transfer tube to move fuel from one compartment to the other, it can get clogged. I would try to verify the senders are working first, that will help you diagnose whether the transfer tube is clogged.

Have you ever run it out of gas?

The tank might be half- full of blow.

Well no blow but at least there is gas. Both sides are about half full and the gauge reads empty. After doing some more digging apparently the gauge needs to match the tank and I didn't realize the cluster I swapped in a few months ago only had a 55L gauge.

Yeah, the 55L tank has a single sender and the 63L tank has 2 senders so the resistance values that the cluster reads are different.
