    Blower motor replacement

I have an 84 318i coupe, 5spd manual w/m10. The heaters been squeaking for a min. Then 1 night it good really loud, a rumble in the dash and the heater quit blowing. Assuming its blower motor. I want to buy used just wondering if anybody knows what year bmws I could pull the blower motor out of? Or where to find one for cheap?? Please any help would be apprcieated;)

i think you can determine which blower you have by identifying whether the coolant pipes from the heater core into the engine department are aluminum or plastic. aluminum is the big blower, plastic takes a smaller cage. there are afail only 2 blowers, the smaller one more rare on some 318s? dont quote me.
Best thing is to get your out and see. its easy and guides are out there. Good luck, definitely easier if you have done it a few times(DAMHIK), just remember to clip the wire ties holding the wirs to the firewall so you have plenty of rooms to fanangle that blower out. YMMW

I was about to complain and be like 'just buy new, it can't be that expensive'... but then I looked it up. $200 is a lot of money for a blower motor!!

Hey is there any chance I could mix and match (motor and fans) to get a working blower motor???? Would I have to balance the fans afterward and do you balance the fans??? Thanks for the help guys

if you look at the squirrel cages they have little clips on the turbines. those are balancing weights. I am sure people swap cages all the time w/o balancing them.

why not find a good used one?

Got new-used blower motor but before I put it in I decided to play w/ old 1. It wouldn't work on its own but Iwas able to jump start it by hand spinning it. I cleaned the resistor and elec. connectors. Still nothing w/out jump start. Put used motor in and it worked fine for 2 days. Couple squeals and rumbles then it quit. The heat only works on hi and the resistor was kinda burnt looking. Could it be the resistor?? I thought it would be the motor due to the squeals, sqwaks, and then craping out. Any ideas??? Thanks for all the input

Only running on High indicates bad resistor pack.

Fan speeds 1-3 go through the resistor, speed 4 bypasses the resistor which is why it works on 4 and not 1-3.

Although swapping blower fan isn't time consuming it is not something I would like to keep doing over and over so its best to just get a known working fan and resistor and call it done.

Are you talking about buying a new motor that doesn't come with sqiurrel cages? Never seen one sold that way for an e30. New motors come with new squirrel cages all balanced and ready to go.

Do you have a 3 speed or 4 speed blower? Some early 84 318's came with a 3 speed and "they say" you need a 3 speed blower but if it's going through a resistor pack I don't see why you couldn't use one.
