            Does the crank rotate twice for every cam gear rotation? I always get it mixed up.

              I remember my marks weren't EXACT after turning the crankcase 4 revolutions. One of them was about a millimeter or two off, I don't remember which one though.

                Yup.

                Smaller = turns more.

                  My bad. I just changed the timing belt and water pump on my new engine at work today outside the car so my memory on how to do it has been refreshed. :) Also changed the front cam seal.

                    Just wondering, i can understand if the car is in gear, having trouble rotating but i dont understand what having the parking brake on would do? maybe i read this wrong, let me know.

                      It would only matter if the car was off the ground when the engine was rotated and would then rotate the wheels aswell if the cars emergency brake was NOT engaged. However if the cars emergency brake was set then It would stop you from rotating once again. I suppose if the car was on the ground with it in gear and no E-brake you may even move the whole car if you turned it hard enough.

                        Guys, the crank timing mark is NOT on the lower cover!

                        It is a small notch, cast into the main seal housing. It lines up with a groove on the crank.

                        If you use this one, life is easier. Leave the toothed wheel off of the crank until you have cam timing set, then do your covers...much easier!

                          One of the most important maintenance tasks for the six-cylinder E30 engines is the replacement of the rubber timing belt. Be sure to read this article!

                          this helped me alot. good luck
