wet driver side carpet?

i think the front driver side sunroof drain is down in the kick panel near the clutch pedal. might be an option

The heater valve is right above the gas pedal and mine dripped a lot when it was going bad. Run the car for a while, then take a flash light and look up in there. There are 2 pipes that come through the firewall and converge into one that enters the heater core. You will be able to tell if its leaking or not.

update:

carpet by the center console/throttle/heater core i believe (right?) is dry

the moist carpet up from the flat base is near the dead pedal/clutch

I just finished dealing with some leak issues...it sucks.

Anyways, tell us more info.

Is it only when raining?

There are only so many drains, so first test out all the drains.

1) Sunroof drain, there are 4 drain ports, 2 in the front which exist like half way between the rockers, and 2 in the rear which exist by the rear sidemarkers

- Pour water into the front two holes, one at a time, test to make sure that both drains below the rocker panels are clear from debris etc. See if you notice any water coming into the cabin.

2) fresh air intake grill (below windshield), when water goes in, water exists through the drains found in the rocker panel located by where the door and the fender meet.

- Make sure that the drain holes are on the bottom are clear from debris. When you pop off the grills, there is a drain nearest to the fenders, make sure that hole is clear from debris as well.

3) The elephant trunk drain.
If you look inside the two grills I mentioned above, there is a triangular blocker from the water entering the blower motor area. However, in times of strong rain, or carwash etc, the water will skip over the blocker, and so such water drains through the elephant trunk like drain on the firewall (passenger side).

- Take the elephant trunk drain off and make sure it's not clogged.
Doing a good water-leak test on this drain is kind of a bitch. You have to remove the cover on the firewall covering the blowermotor area.
Once you do that, you will see that there is a foam seal sealing the blower motor housing. Pour water into that area, and make sure that it is draining through the elephant drain. (water can leak through deteriorated foam seal, such was my case)
Look into the cabin and see if you can spot any drips.
Also make sure that the elephant drain is in good shape and installed good and tight. Otherwise the water will drip between the metal and the rubber covers, and will probably cause rust (you'll see what I mean once you get to removing/installing the drain).

If NONE of these cause the water to leak into the cabin, then drains are probably not the culprit.

Have you checked your door's weather stripping?
