Oil Pressure - Sensor or Pump?

ok, my oil pressure light has been going on lately... but it's been inconsistant. Sometimes just at idle, sometimes anywhere below 1.5k rpm  sometimes not at all. wtf

i think i'm just gonna find a pressure sensoer & replace that asap... i guess that'll be the most definite answer to my question, huh ;)

    Here's to luck

    fuck... this ain't lookin good

took it for a drive to & from work today... at start-up it was fine. once it warmed up it would stay on at idle... then it would stay steady further & further into the revs as it got warmer. tonight on the way home once it got up to temp it stayed illuminated anywhere under 2500 rpms

that sound like an oil pump or what? :?

the only way to find out which it is, is by testing the oil pressure, and then comparing it to the specs, if its with in specs then you have a bad sender, if its below, you have a worn oil pump :(

how many miles are on the car???

btw i think i'll be a sender, some times oil gets past the seal and messes up everyhting.
also check the connection at the sending unit it. it is loacted lower right side of block near the oil pan directly under the oil filter.

      hope that helps.

I have a spair oil level sender if you want it, $10 shipped cant get any cheaper then that.

I have a really rusty oil pump too, but i think it is beyond salvage (totally cleaned it, then 3D modeled it, left it in a bin outside and rust/corosion did thier things )

and realisticly, the only parts that wear on the oil pump are the 2 rotating gears.

180k on the engine... guessing it's the original sensor... & probably the original pump too :?

how would i go about testing it... guessing there's a tool i can rent at autozone or somethin & plug it in where the sensor goes?

i gotta buy a freakin bently manual... better yet, go to my library & see if i can jack one 8) (......or just loan it for a few days ;) )

yah all you need to do is get a oil pressure gauge, from any local autop parts store, then unscrew the sending unit and screw in the oil pressure gauge. get the specs while the engine is running. and then compare to the book or get someone from heere to post it, as i'll check the specs later, if i remeber.

and if its the pump, realisticly you just need to pull the oil pan and oil pump, and replace the gears in there...if you need to do that (which i hope you don't need to) i'll give you some more details.

hope that helps man, and good luck.

does the car run badly? does it get hotter than normal? revs smoothly and still has lots of power? cause if it runs fine it's probably just the sensor.

reminds me of the time I had a friend's dad pick me and some buddies up at the airport in seattle to drive us 150 miles north back home. big mistake.. he was an idiot that liked to "fix" his own cars. The thing looked and felt like it was going to fall apart, he had to turn the steering wheel like 4x as much as a normal car would need to even make small turns (and I'm going on the freeway in this thing??) anyway, his oil light came on about 5 miles from home, he thought it was just the oil level (apparently it had a bad leak too). He thought it was strange that the oil level was still normal, but he added some anyway.. I tried to tell him that his oil pump was probably bad but he said something about how the oil light came on every day for the first 5 minutes of driving (!!!!) and something about the transmission and then drove off.. well, more like crawled, because with no oil pressure the car could barely do 25mph, it got really hot too. I have no idea how we made it the rest of the way home in that thing..

uhh, sorry for the rant. ;)

spaz, you find those oil pressure specs? i'm gonna see if i can get a pressure tester today & check it

that's what i'm hopin... of course i just called the local autozone & they don't have a testing gauge... so i called up the stealership & they had 2 pressure sending units left for 14 bucks... guess i'm just gonna go pick it up, plug it in & pray :?
