Tachometer not working correctly please help

My tachometer intermittenly will read about 650-700 rpms at idle and then it will drop down to 100 rpms even though the motor is running at the same speed. It wil pop back up to the right rpm when I give it a quick rev and then go back to 650-700 rpms or the 100 rpms mark when it goes back to idle. It doesnt always do it but I would say about 50% of the time. Sometimes when Im driving and I shift around 5500rpms I notice that the tach is going slower than it should from about 4800 to 5500. Anyone have any ideas whats going on? By the way the car is a 89' 325iX. Thanks!

either the tach itself is getting stuck, or the SI Board is failing.

What's the SI board? How hard and how much does it cost to fix? Where is it located in the car?

The SI (service indicator board) is the solid state board located below your gauges in the instrument cluster. It is an easy fix, just take the cluster out remove the back, remove the board, and reverse.

As far as price, I've seen them from $40 or ebay to Bavauto for over $100 (I'd recommend these, but someone here may be able to tell you a cheaper place to get them).
