Im ready to throw my towel in on this one. I put the cylinder head back on after two machine shops looked over the head and told me there were no bent valves and everything looks to be in order. A vacuum test on the exhaust and intake port also approved all valves are okay. I readjusted the F''king valves again to .08" this time, just to cover my ass, and double checked each one of the eccentric gaps after rotating it three times. Started the Bitch up, STILL HAS THE EXACT SAME TAPPING NOISE. Doesn't even quite down.

I'm beginning to think it could be rod knock.

For anyone that's looking at this post, that can shit vanilla icecream and hear voices inside your head, check out the video attached to this post and Shoot me a guess on what it is, because your idea is better than mine at this point.

My only advice is to maybe set the valve lash a bit tighter, doesn't sound like knock to me.

Just out of curiosity, how much resistance does your feeler have once you set the lash? Should feel like you're dragging something (maybe like a large bolt) over a fairly strong magnet. Before I knew this my stuff was always too loose.

I readjusted the valves one last time super tight, put in new injectors (junkyard special) and even gave it a quick prayer haha. Didn't work at all.To me it sounds like only one valve is ticking. I remember when the timing belt broke, it snapped one rocker arm. I bought a new rocker arm, valves and used the same eccentric that was on the broken rocker arm. Maybe that old eccentric has a nasty flat spot I didn't notice and it's f''king up the valve clearance.

I swapped eccentrics that looked flat with new ones and still no difference in the sound. Either no oil is getting to the rocker arm or the cam lobe is bad. I'm done with the car, way to much time and money spent on it. Just going to sell it now.

I've uploaded a new video with the valve cover off.

It's not real clear in the video but it looks dry, like there is no oil getting to the valve train!

Haha There is plenty of oil circulating through the valve train.

Ok so this is a real stretch, but I read something on a corvette forum about the valve guides being worn out and sounding exactly like too much lash.

Could be a worn cam lobe too... but if that was the case it wouldn't be running quite right. Other than that I'm out of ideas bro.

I'm new here but this sounds like a exact description of what my car does. I've been driving my e30 for going on 2 years now. m20b27 ticking like its going to throw a rod and the only thing i have replaced is the starter. I have taken the car to multiple mechanics. Ive settled on the cam BUT the only problem is the car has loads of power. how can it be the cam and still run fine.

** Note when i start cold sometimes the car will not idle without "keeping it alive" with the gas so this could be a tell tale sign of the cam but im not sure to be honest ive just been driving it but the OP rekindled my intrest in it.( take into account that i have done everything including valve adjustments etc and i am aware of some possible intake leaks)

I've isolated the sound to cylinder 5 exhaust valve. seems like it's coming from the rocker arm and cam lobe mating surface. I've heard a bad valve guide could make it so no matter how tight you make the valve adjustment it won't fix the valve lash tick.

Just keep it running until you swap something better in - no sense in putting too much emotional attachment into a M20 bro

FU''KING FIXED IT!!! took the head off for the 3RD god damn time. Took it again to a machine shop and had them pull apart the intake, exhaust valves and rocker arms on cylinder 5 to check for any damage. Apparently they found on the valve stems a nick that would cause slight resistance when in motion. They smoothed out the stems. I purchased two new rocker arms (for cylinder 5) and a thicker head gasket. Started it up and it sounds like it just came out the factory, perfect.
