Fan clutch question

    Fan clutch question

    When I am driving my cars temperature sticks at the mid point, when ever I take off and give the car gas it goes lower. Does this mean my fan clutch is stuck on? I just replaced my WP and thermostat with my timing belt.

    Your fan clutch is always "on" when the engine is on. To test the fan clutch do the newspaper test. If it stops then you needs a new fan clutch, if it doesn't and tears the newspaper then it's good.

    Does the car overheat?

        No, the fan clutch is not something that gets turned on and off, there are no wires going to it. If the engine is on...the fan SHOULD be turning.

          You have it somewhat correct but it's not an electric on/off

          When the car is at highway speeds, for the most part the clutch is disengaged and the fan is free spinning (maybe not completely but the fan is not spinning at engine rpm) . When the clutch gets warm (car temp goes up) the fan turns with the engine, when cool the fan will free spin/spin slower

              Can you better explain? In traffic temp will go up slightly, when moving will go down.

                Well when im on the highway or in motion my temp is at 1/4 or a bit higher. On my e46 what ever im doing the needle is dead straight at half. No fluctuation.

                  That's generally how it's going to be. In traffic with more heat your temp might marginally rise. Also could be your fan clutch is worn, get the car to op temp and try to stop it with a newspaper as stated. If it stops, replace the clutch.

                      My first impression was that your thermostat was stuck open, but then I read that you just replaced it... did you get a lower temp stat by accident or something?
