I tried Seafoam today in my 1989 325is (long)

    My car has 128K miles.

As many have recommended, I put 1/3 of the container (pint) in a cup and slowly sucked it with the hose that attaches to the fuel pressure regulator while the engine was revving @ 2K. After it was all sucked up, I immediately shut off the engine, which actually still sputtered for about 10 seconds after the ignition was off. That was kind of scary. Of course I then put the FPR hose back to where it belonged.

While the Seafoam was simmering in there, I added 1/3 of the case to the gas tank (which is just over 1/2 full, so about 9 gallons), and then another 1/3 of Seafoam to the crankcase (which has Mobil 1 15w-50). After 30 minutes, I turned on the engine and revved the engine. Lots of white smoke, but not as much as I've seen from other people's cars in other forums (Audi, Mustang, Camaro). After the smoke was mostly gone, I took the car on a 10 minute spirited drive during which I revved the engine to like 4500-5K before shifting.

I don't notice any difference. Some people have noted that the engine idles a bit smoother, accelerates better, runs quieter... I don't think I got any of that. I wonder if some of those users were just imagining this change (placebo effect), but seems like EVERYBODY noticed it, except me. My car was already pretty smooth at idle (not perfect, though), and the car will vibrate a little when I'm sitting at a red light. It's subtle and not really that big a deal, and that hasn't gone away (not that I care). Accleration is pretty much the same. No sudden boost of power. The only thing I'd be interested to know is if my fuel economy improves (hopefully).

To those of you who have used Seafoam in the past and noted improvements, did this last over the next several weeks/months, or did it go back to the way it was in a couple days? Did your fuel mileage improve?

As far as I can tell, Seafoam is pure placebo effect. It might get some carbon out of your engine, but at this scale it won't do much for you. I've had better success with performance by just giving the car a good ol' Italian tuneup.

It's always nice to create a cloud of smoke that covers your entire neighborhood, though. :)

I don't think that's true. I've used it on 2 of my past cars, an 89 Subaru and an 85 Chevy S-10, and in both instances, the improvement to the running quality of the engine was astounding. I had friends drive them after doing it, and even without telling them that I did it, they told me that the car sounded and ran better. It isn't meant to be a performance enhancer, it's meant to simply and thoroughly clean out your engine.

All it did was create tons of smoke on my car. Nothing else really. lol

Did these improvements last or did they go away pretty quickly, like after the next tank of gas?

I drove my car for a little while just right now and noticed that the idle is maybe 50 rpm lower than it was before. It used to be 700 or higher when fully warmed up, but just now it seemed closer to 600-650. Weird. Not sure if that's just my mind playing games or not. Still no change in driveability, though.

Question: I was going to drive the car for 50-100 miles before changing the oil, but someone told me that I should've changed it right away, like minutes after the first drive following the treatment. Is this true? Does this stuff really mess up the oil?

your concentrations are way off. i put a full bottle in the gas tank at half full and used a full bottle in the intake manifold. it did wonders. However it also depends how dirty your fuel system is, some cars have dirtier fuel systems than others (regardless of mileage)

The Seafoam can said to use 1/3 pint in the intake, and that's what I did. Yeah, I did skimp in putting it in the fuel tank, though, but not by too much. A full can is supposed to work for anything from 8-25 gallons, so my concentration was near the low end of that range.

You will only notice a difference if your engine is carboned up. Healthy running engines will see almost no gain as there is nothing for the Seafoam to clean off.

                            ^ I like that

-I ran a whole bottle (yep!) through my FPR hose. But, I replaced my spark plugs and 02 sensor afterwards too, so I can't tell you that the Seafoam helped.

-But she a-runs better now! (*Italian accent*)
