How do i check the ECU?

Hey guys, i have problems with my car.. again.. What happened is that i don't get fuel or spark.. I did have the same problem before and it was the ECU.. So i was thinking that maybe the ECU went out again because something burned it ro whatever? The car was working fine after i changed the water pump and put everything back together. But then a day later, no fuel and no spark. I have had similar problem with my old one. It was working before i took the car apart and changed all the gaskets and belts, but when i put everything together i wouldn't start until i got a new ECU. So... I heard they [ECUs] are not very friendly with cold weather so it might be it. But is there any way to check if the ECU is working without finding another one and trying it out? Also maybe you guys know any other things that my cause this problem, i would much appreciate it.

    Thanks a lot!

What car/engine? There can be many other reasons for a no spark/fuel condition than the DME.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The main relay, timing reference sensors, engine harness, and fusible links are the obvious first suspects.

The Bentley repair manual also has a nice troubleshooting section for the DME, look it over and perform the tests to narrow down potential suspects.

It wasn't any of those things :) My dad helped me figure it out. It was the OBC anti theft system that didn't let the car start. When i disconnected the OBC the car started right away. I guess i have something wrong with either the OBC itself or something that triggers an anti theft. Thanks everyone though.
