    the machines are expensive i would just have a local shop do it for you because most decent machines will run you around $1000 and a home made solution isnt always the best either

      How do you pull codes on an 87 325is?

      Thread Jacking: I've seen an obd2 adapter piece for the e30 connector under the hood (the round one used to reset oil lights), so it could hook up to my obd2 scan tool. has anyone used this? will it work?

        The obd2 tool won't understand obd1 codes, nor know how to communicate with an obd1 system.

        The part you have seen is an adapter to allow an obd2 tool to connect to early obd2 cars that had both connectors.
        The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
