I have a 1989 325i M50 and if the car sits for a day or so it will crank but won't start up unless i jump start it. I've changed the battery a few times already and have disconnected aftermarket head unit to see if that would fix the issue but it has not. When i park it i have to disconnect negative from the battery or else it drains the power and will not start unless jump started or if i roll the car in gear and pop clutch not sure it there's a short or if its the alternator.

Sounds like a short if you know it drains the battery when shut off.

Do these alternators have voltage regulators that could stay on and drain the battery? Seen it with other cars.
