How does this head come apart?

-OK, I'm taking apart e30matt's old 2.5 head to rebuild and use for my 2.7i. Ive removed the lash adjusting mechanisims and rocker clips. How do I get the cam out? It has to come out before the rocker shafts, right? How?

    Rocker shafts first.

Take the timing belt sprocket off of the cam.
Drive the rockershafts out with a long extension and a hammer.
Take out the 2 10mm bolts that hold the front cam seal in and remove the seal+holder.
Then you can slide the cam out.

you don't have to hammer the rocker shafts out, you can do it that way but you could possibly damage something. the other way is to take the rockers off the cam lobes one at a time (by taking out the eccentrics) and slide the rocker shafts out that way, it's a bit like a puzzle but you can figure it out if you play with it enough. I believe you have to start with the exhaust rockers, but I can't remember, the bentley talks about it though.

Yea, I know. He said he already took the eccentrics out. Sometimes the shafts are siezed into the head a bit though; tapping them out with a hammer won't hurt anything- I've done it quite a few times. Just as long as you're not banging the crap out of anything... just some tapping to get it to slide on out.

-OK, thanks fellas it's apart now, BUT....

-Anyone make inserts for a cam journal that's been spun? I just took my new-to-me cam out and the last journal is spun. Scored the cam and head. Options? Opinions?

          -Nice going, Matt.
