    Valve tick or Injectors?

I definetly had a loud(ish) tick before I did a valve adjustment earlier today ~ first time i'd ever taken a valve cover off. Now the engine seems not to make it but now i have a different tick and i'm not sure if the injectors are supposed to be so loud....at idle they are barely noticeable, but give it gas (inside garage or next to a car) and you can hear a ticking alright...also reachest its loudest when the engine reaches operating temp. I adjusted w/ .010" = .254mm feeler so i adjusted slightly tighter to match ".25mm when cold" spec

what are the tricks on listening inside the valve cover?fuel rail? my butt dyno didnt feel a difference beofre/after adjustment.

this job was easier than people say...just a LOT of patience req. 2-3hours and 5/10 in my books. JUST DO IT!
    No more e30s for me.

Yes, the fuel injectors are loud, its normal. Put a screwdriver to your valve cover to get an idea of how loud your valves are. It's been about a year since mine have been adjusted, and they're getting pretty loud. I'm heading to the stealer today for a valve cover gasket, among other things...

It took you three hours to adjust your valves? Adjusting my valves was the easiest thing Ive ever done on an e30, only took me half an hour.

M20 injectors are noisy so it might not be to bad. Its hard to diagnose without actually hearing it in person. My suggestion is to make sure every valve is exactly to spec and if the ticking is still there its your injectors.

^^Took me so long 'cause it was the first time i've ever seen valves in person and wanted to make sure i did everything as best possible. i'll read a bit around before i take the valve cover apart

also, i couldnt figure out what to look for when i put the screw driver to the valve cover and my ear on it...u gotta tell me, that's why i asked jaja. ty

The injectors shut off if RPMs are above 1200 and the idle swtich is contacted...

So drive next to a wall, get it goin a about 3000rpm in gear and take your foot of the gas and see if the noise goes away.

            .004 mm eliminated!

quote] <--- (wow, that didn't work)

I fail to see how you could adjust "slightly tighter" and still be within specs. The clearances are specific to the decimal that counts. .004mm difference is negligible, but how did you determine the way to get rid of those pesky .004 mm's? By feel? Really, really, really thin gauge?

Hey, if you are happy, cool. When I do mine, I follow the book, go factory spec., and go thru twice. ( I did not know there was a time limit..lol)

^^ the slightly tighter i meant is the ammount of drag i had on the feeler gauge...it wasnt tight enough for me to have even a slight problem removing the feeler gauge, but it did have some drag to it. I rechecked after i tightened the eccentric just to make sure it wasnt too tight

I always adjust mine so theres a large amount of resistance to get he guage out. My motor always purreld like a kitten after.

another cause of ticking can be worn down eccentrics. They can get a flat spot on them over time and when you do an adjustment they will return to their flat position. i have never replaced my eccentrics and i am just relaying something i read.

                    i see..

i got a friend in a car to drive next to me and act as a "wall" i didnt hear the injectors shut off or the noise go away...IMO the tick is not that loud but its noticeable when i have the windows down and i'm just taking off in first gear.

i'm gonna post a sound file. how about that? ... digi cams work good enough?

my odo just hit 126k so its doubtfull they're worn...where'd you buy the ones? buy rockers too?

btw i tried the revvin in 1st past 3k slowly next to some thick bushes and let the gas off and to be honest, i coulnt hear a tick after 2000rpm nor on the way down...i do have a small exhaust leak at the cat, but that shouldn't have mattered

my car has gotten louder recently as well. its annoying, everyone is like, "is your car supposed to sound like that?", or "is your car supposed to idle like that?" when the idle fluctuates. suckas cant comprehend the precision behind da deutchland engineerin ya!

Slightly off-topic here, but does anyone know if there are really any benefits to running a bottle of fuel injector cleaner every now and then?

My valves are starting to get kinda loud too, I need to adjust them.

I notice it helps, especially after my car sits for a period of time and the like. Car runs a little smoother. I also notice about a 2 mg increase in gas milage. That doesnt last very long though. Overall IMO its worth the 2.50 or whatever every 5 fillups.
