I broke a timing belt and didn't notice it for a month... ;)


You'd notice a lack of power and probably some valvetrain noise too.

Well, no lack of power, but my valve tick seems to have gotten louder after a spirited donut session. Probly just need to adjust them, it's about that time again.

mine recently got louder, but then again, after i changed my oil (2000 miles ago) i never filled it up. with a filter change, how many quarts should be used? i think i only used 4 or 5. but that still wouldnt explain the sudden valvetrain noise increase. maybe its my head playin tricks on me?

If you broke a rocker the motor would only run on 5 cylenders. The massive misfire would be pretty hard to miss.

Yeah thats pretty much what i had figured, although the increased noise is not my imagination, it's quite noticeable.

You should always change your filter with an oil change, and i use 5 quarts every time, let the engine burn off the small amount of excess. I recently changed my oil, 232,000 miles, i used castrol GTX high mileage, and also ran a deposit cleaner through. Since i used a slightly heavier wieght (20w50 as opposed to 15w50) it hushed up the valves pretty well, until the other night.
