Speedometer plug is located on your diff. make sure the plug isn't rusted out, and it's in good shape. Usually, water gets stuck on plug because it has rubber boot around it, and after while it starts to eat the metal, and usually thats what causes the speedometer plug not to work.95' M3.

you can see it by pulling off the shift boot. pull it off and there should be a wire running through the rubber thing around your shifter, give that wire a good tug enough to move it about 1/2". replace the fuse and test to see if there's still a short, you can either run around with it like that or buy a new cable if that was the problem. hth

Thats what happened to me.
