So I was messing with my e30 and noticed a little water in the trunk from all the rain we had. But I went to clean it up and it's a 87 and has what looks to be sound deadening material. I started to pry it up and noticed moisture trapped between it. It's like thick almost cardboard material. Any clues to what it is? I pulled most of it up.
What is the crap in the trunk?

Ya that stuff it think if I would have left that stuff in I wouldn't have a trunk lol. It's horrible.Comment

Since it is only found on 6 cylinder RWD cars and weighs 57 lbs, it is safe to say it is for weight balance.
Also, it really does not have any effect on road noise. If it were for sound deadning, they would have done the spare tire well too.Comment

Ya that makes sense. It's not in my 318is. But it's gone now and hopefully I can prevent anymore rust from forming lolComment
