Odometer gears replaced still doesn't turn

Ok as the title says I recently had my Odometer gears replaced by a reputable instrument cluster repair shop were I am located. My friend has also used this shop to have his gears replaced and the are still working after a year. Anyways as the title says I re installed the cluster and the odometer does not work.... I have double checked the connections. He tests the gears for you and they were working when I picked them up. Before I installed we reset the trip gauge and it worked. Any ideas? I found this on here and was not very helpful. I read an article on Bav auto talking about the Odometer Drive Motor can fail and cause issues. If so what is this and can i test it?

I think that most of your issues are related to poor installation practices by the shop that performed the repairs.

You cannot simply install odometer gears and expect them to work. Proper fitment and operation must be checked before installing into the cluster. A proper test bench must be used or else you will (or the shop) will be pulling the cluster apart over and over until it works. Some of the gear sets can be very easy to mix up which is which and some have a tight fit.

We at Bavrest built our own test bench that not only tests the odometer circuit but the cluster as a whole. Our repairs are all warrantied for a minimum of 3 years.

IN regards to the e30 clusters, there are many small things, details, that cannot be overlooked or you will have a cluster with intermittent operation. Such things can be identifying poor solder joints, re-working important contact points, cleaning corroded and oxidized connections, assembly hardware and many other things. Our cluster repairs and full rebuilt clusters are assembled and guaranteed to work.

When it comes to instrumentation repair and receiving a cluster that is going to work for decades, its best to send it to a specialist like us.
