when i modify my search on real to an 88i, those parts (14/15) are listed, but not for my car. i'm beginning to lean towards the csb letting go. but still, why only when braking. i can downshift from high speep through the gears all the way to 2 or 3 mph and get no clunk, only while on the brake. if it was the csb, wouldn't there be other symptoms/vibrations involved?

Yes. 14 is slotted at the bolt holes to allow you to set 15 at a close clearance to the front subframe. Under normal driving and not braking, 15 touches nothing. When the brakes are applied hard enough to shift the power unit forward, 15 contacts the front subframe and stops the forward movement.

It's not a damper, it's sole purpose in life is to stop the power unit moving forward.

What is 14/15? Some sort of vibration damper or something? Doesn't look very important

Do they visually look OK or did you try jacking it up a bit to see how far the engine/trans moves?

i'm wondering if the csb broke free? it sucks i cant get her up high enough (lent jack to friend) to pull the heat shield. only makes the noise when braking and it is definetly against the hump between the pass seat and the console.

There is a mount that keeps the engine/trans from shifting forward but it would be difficult for it to fail. If the noise and rubbing happen at the tunnel between the seats i would look at the trans mount first.

I'm no e30 expert, so I can't speak for every model ever made, but there are no drivetrain mounts (as far as I know) between the engine mounts and the trans mount. The only bushings someone could misconstrue as drivetrain mounts/bushings and are right next to the bellhousing are the control arm bushings.

Have a friend get in the passenger seat and take a video so we can hear the noise.
