    Jump Starting Lesson Learned

A lesson from an e30 noob to other e30 noobs:
On e30s, the RED wire on the battery is NEGATIVE, and BLACK is POSITIVE. Lesson learned after being careless and not reading the actual symbols on the battery and the fact that the red is going to the body. Luckily didn't damage anything, just stalled my other car and almost melted the jump starting cables.

This. I did this once, then my radio worked again so it was all good.

You've learned not all vehicle terminals are color code correct.

Wow. First off the ground is Brown. I haven't seen a red cable but suppose it could have been changed. Second, it's only a few inches long and bolts to the trunk...obviously a ground.

In all fairness he did state that he was a "noob". Which I am surprised is actually a word that is still used with any frequency.

Its a foolish mistake to make , but there are far worse. Suggestion for the future.

            1. Never allow a battery charger to charge a battery overnight unattended -i.e. while sleeping. If there is a fire that is caused you are quite possibly killed.
            2. Find an inexpensive fire extinguisher and keep it handy. If you are going to be working on your (others) cars then its a great thing to have. I have 2 nearby. Both with Zip ties cut and pins pulled. Ready to spray. Dont want to loose precious second trying to break off or cut off zip ties and pull pins.

Yes, I wrote that it goes to the body, that's how I realized afterwards when I actually took a closer look that it can't be the positive.

People don't use 'noob' anymore? I must be getting old...

I did it once, Was just careless jumping my truck one night. After each mistake I just make sure everything is done right the first time. Cost less that way too! Glad you caught it pretty soon before any real damage was done.
