So I'm cruising home from a long day at work along the GW Parkway and I hop onto I 495. I am in third gear and hit the throttle. Now keep in mind, my tach recently went out for some strange reason (along with fuel/temp/power mirrors/reverse lights), and I may have over revved it or held it at redline too long. Not sure exactly, but the motor started to sound like it was sputtering, and when I give it more gas, I hear popping. But this doesnt sound like normal backfire to me (but what do I know?), it sounds more mechanical, like a sharp metallic "ting" sound. And it sounds like its coming from the intake manifold. I am scared shitless I ruined the motor. I haven't changed the t belt since I bought her, and dont know the previous owners story on the t belt. Bought with 68k, and now has 73k. Some one give me some guidance, I need this vehicle, as it is my only source of transportation now, until bike is repaired. Ugh.. I feel so emo right now.:(

Sounds like it started out as a blown fuse 10, had the tach been there you would of been fine. Reason for grounding is the reverse wire where it goes to the trans under the shift boot.
As for the motor, fine job son!

take off the valve cover and see what it looks like under there. A broken rocker should be obvious.

sweet... now that i think more about it, your theories on the rocker arm make more sense. im kinda glad its just a rocker arm (crosses fingers)... now, are there any write ups on this, or something i can look at before attempting this job? on a scale of 1 to 5, what would u guys rate it?Claus Luthe is my hero.

Well, if you want to pull it, its possible to do without removing the head. It is a little bit of a pain, but you dont have to put another head gasket on, head bolts, etc. Once everything is out of the way, you just pull the rocker shaft out with the broken rocker (assuming this is the problem) put the new one in and reinstall.Old and improved:
