    Rattling Noise !?

    Hey Guys,

Haven't had my new E30 for too long but I seem to have come across my first *necessary* repair :p

Today when I was leaving the mall, I started my car, went in first and heard this rattling sound coming from the centre console/shifter area. It would become more rapid and louder the faster i went, and if I go into neutral then it will begin settling. I took out my shift boot and saw what seemed to be the driveshaft kind of rattling around. After some searching it seems that I may need to replace a bearing, U joint or the whole driveshaft ? the Only thing is.. this car is S52 swapped and the previous owner had a M3 E36 driveshaft put in ( I think)

Any ideas on what specifically may need fixing/replacing, and which car I should get the part from ?

Ill post a video to help show the problem

    Thanks !

Sorry, we couldn’t find that page

Theres the sound.. I figured it was the driveshaft but someone notified me it may be the flex disk, or hangar bearing .. any ideas guys?

Could be something stuck in it (U-joints, flex disc, vibration dampener, etc). Could be the shifter sagging and tapping the shaft. A bad CSB... Lots of things. Could be a ziptie that's been fastened to the driveshaft (Really good way to fuck with somebody).

We won't be able to tell you just from that sound, other than it's driveshaft/transmission related. Based on location with increasing in frequency during increasing speed and all. Rotationalthingymabobbers and stuff.

So, get underneath your car and see what's going on. Investigate and buy the right parts, not guess parts.

Okay, so I managed to get under the car today..

The Flex Disk/ Giubo has no visible cracking and seems to be in more than fine condition. The CSB also seems to be fine, as I tried pushing around the driveshaft but it wouldn't budge. One thing I did notice though.. a metal piece from the shifter is about 1 inch away from the driveshaft, so I think that might be it !!

I went for a little drive, took out the shift boot and could see the driveshaft wobbling a bit, but can I assume its normal for the driveshaft to wobble a bit? I mean it wasn't going crazy, just some movement.

If it is the shifter piece.. how can I get it out of the way? I tried pushing up on it but it really didnt wanna move

Theres a pic I snapped, The black piece on the bottom obviously being the Driveshaft . Also, yesterday for about 20 minutes, the sound randomly went away.. so this leads me to believe it surely isnt a driveshaft component. Again, Im not super mechanically inclined as you can tell, so if anyone could help me out here and point me in the right direction, Id really appreciate it

                thanks

Something is definitely hitting the driveshaft. Do your reverse lights work? Often times the wiring for the reverse light switch will come unplug, get wrapped around the driveshaft and will make noise. If the wiring final flew off, that would explain why the noise stopped.

The shifter clearance is all normal. Nothing should be moving around enough for those to hit each other. Your shifter carrier and selector rod looked a bit hacked together though. The carrier looks to have been cut and welded and possibly the same same with the selector rod (the part wrapped in electrical tape).

Seems like I keep finding possible culprits... But I think this is the one ! One of the bolts where the flex disk and Driveshaft meet is very clearly lose ! The nut is missing and he bolt isnt all the way through.

I couldn't reach the area with a wrench or socket, so I may have to take it to a mechanic. I managed to shove the bolt in a bit, gonna take it for a quick drive and see if the sound is gone for a little bit

                      EUREKA

Problem has been found, it was the loose bolt in the flex disc. Gonna take it to a mechanic to get it tightened up as I cant reach it. Thanks to all who responded
