    Rear knocking when when shifting?

    Hi guy,

I hear a loud knocking noise when I am shifting on 1st and 2nd. Specifically, when I step on clutch or step off the gas quickly. It won't happen on higher gear or faster speed. So it's like when I get off gas quickly or step on clutch quickly, i can hear a loud knocking noise from rear. Do you guys have any idea what can cause this?

    P.S. I have a 91 318i with 3.73 LSD.

Thanks guys. I will check and see if it is caused by the bushing.

What kind of knocking exactly? Ie, if you let off the gas, does it knock just once? I have a rear end knock when I get on or let off the gas, and it basically sounds like there's slack in the driveline somewhere. I have a hunch it might be my driveshaft.

This is what mine sounds like aswell. Also when I come to stop with the clutch engaged I can hear the something moving back and forth. Shifting from 1st to 2nd gear will make my knock aswell.

Check to make sure the drive shaft centre bearing is still bolted to the car.

Thanks guys. It's such a great community here. Eventually, it was those nuts mounted the diff got loosen. Tighten those nuts, problem is gone :) in my case.

Sounds like mine. If I can get the car to start bucking, it'll do it every time. I have a strong suspicion it's my DS U-joints, and failing that, my subframe bushings. I already did them, but they didn't seat right. Been meaning to fix that.

                      Incorrect diff backlash maybe?

Diff mount or Subframe busings or Shock mounts or maybe it's the fact that you didn't keep your hookers in the trunk strapped down tight enough?
