When did they change the design of the power windows? I know the later ones are smoother. I have an 88 thats rough and I dont know if I should just replace them or see about upgrading them if I have the early style. Anyone know when they updated? If mine are early style, how do I convert to the newer style?

I updated to the newer style, they are definately consistant. Required some drilling and matching up of holes and gaskets - but worked great. If you did this, you'll need the window rails from inside the door too.- Sean HayesComment

What I don't understand is how the earlier method is a better design? It's a huge ass ball bearing - there are shit loads of moving parts.
The later style has very little moving pieces, less work that the motor has to do and just plain makes more sense.- Sean HayesComment

The later style has multiple arms that move around with those stupid plastic rollers that will break off and jam the whole mechanism. If you hit the swtich with a broken roller it'll bend the entire regulator out of shape and occasionally take the door with it.Adam Fogg- '88 M3
