All your dash lights light up. But does the light indicating low fuel also light up? I just took apart my dash and got my fuel gauge to work and am trying to figure out if my bulb burnt out or if I'm getting better mileage all of a sudden.

When you turn the key to ON...
Hrm, it doesn't in my 85 318i, and I've never known it to turn on in other old vehicles because it's not wired to the computer, just directly to the gauge/ sending unit. So in theory it should only turn on with the key on and the fuel low.Last edited by Navarone; 03-08-2015, 02:33 PM.

However the low fuel light works on both cars when I'm low on fuel.

Most vehicles are designed so that every light comes on for a moment when the key is turned on. Its a very basic diagnostic tool to see if any lights are burned out.
Key word, most. I no longer have an e30 to compare, and even the ones I have owned didn't have an operating light anyway. No E30 ClubOriginally posted by MrBurgundyAnyways, mustangs are gay and mini vans are faster than your car, you just have to deal with that.

I did some more testing and asked someone more knowledgable than me. He said that most cars do turn the low fuel light on just as a light bulb test when the key is turned to ON.
His 94 suburban doesn't even have a fuel light, our '00 something S10 does go on when you turn the key, my 85 318i doesn't, the "GMC" (isuzu) diesel box truck doesn't, my 03 matrix didn't, the 05 matrix cluster I have doesn't, most of my other older than 87 cars and trucks didn't.
This doesn't really apply to your specific car, so perhaps yours should turn on when key is on. I don't know.

My fuel gauge itself comes on when the key is turned to ON, so I'm guessing that's why the light doesn't come on - because why would it come on when the gauge is full? My car is a 6/1987 and doesn't do all the cool motronic 1.3 codes so it might not have the newfandangled test light function. Plus my check engine light is missing (fun) so I'm not sure how big of a wrench that would throw in things.
I can't remember if it came on or not. I took the bulb out and it seems to test okay, and my car does this thing where the low fuel light would flicker for a few miles before coming on steady. The bulb was indeed flickering, but I didn't want to potentially run the car out of fuel to find out.
Meh it's better to fill up every half tank anyway
it's a Kenny Powers quote on wheels
