I got my system vacuumed out and installed a 134a conversion kit. I've been using it for 2 years now and it is still blowing cold. I have heard that it will eventually fail, but the kit I bought had a universal oil that is suppose to be good for any type of compressor. Don't know but it is still cold as shit after two years.

if its gone, theres a leak, get nitrogen fill it listen for leak, replace faulty part, then fill er up, just make sure there is no propane in the rechagre refridgerant.

        or

replace the faulty part, put 2 converison fittings on to make it r134a, have a shop recharge it and when they do they can extract the old oil and put in compatable stuff.

All e30s came with r12 correct? Mine only blows cool now and I have a 91 318is. Not sure when they made the switch from r12.

They switched to r134a in either 1992 or 1993.

                It was in '93.

Regarding the Freeze 12 stuff-I have been doing research on this topic all day because the R12 in my '88 M3 decided to take a leave of absence. The two places in my town that do a/c work are going to run dye thru the system to check for leaks and then charge with the Freeze 12. After all of my research, I am just not sure. I mean, it WILL work and is meant as a direct replacement for R12-but it still isn't the real deal.

If you do put in the Freeze 12, and then go to an a/c shop later because of more troubles, they will usually not touch the system because evacuating the Freeze 12 will contaminate their R12 tank. General consensus by the a/c pros is that if you had a functioning R12 system that might just need a recharge with some new o-rings or a hose, then stick with R12. There is nothing out there that is truly compatible with it.

In my case, on Monday morning I make the hour long trip to the BMW dealer and pay up for the real deal-as much as I don't want to...
