MPG Needle Operation

Someone refresh my memory.

How does a properly operating MPG needle work?

Ignition off: Below 0

Ignition On: 40?

Engine On: 0

Driving: Proper MPG.

Anyone ever accidentally pulled the needle and gear causing it to get completely out of sync?

Ign on: full right past 0.
