Causes for extra long cranks on start up?

Hey guys, recently picked up a e30 and starting to get familiar with working on cars.

I've noticed my 1989 325i takes extra long cranks to start up sometime. Usually in the mornings (not cold) if I've been driving a lot the day before.

One time the engine cut off randomly in the middle of shifting from first to 2nd gear so I'm inclined to believe that fuel isn't being properly delivered from the tank to the engine.

What are some things you would check/replace in diagnosing this issue? I'm here to learn and would like to use this as an opportunity to better understand how fuel/ignition systems work.

Do you notice dark smoke coming out the exhaust when you start it up in the morning? Could be leaky injectors or a bad FPR. A bad fuel pressure regulator will leak fuel through the vacuum hose, so pop it off and check if there's gas in it.

possibilities are fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and dirty fuel injectors. to begin, i would get a pressure gage, take off the fuel line and check the pressure when you crank it over.

might be a good idea to get a bently manual too. all the diagnosis are in there.

adding to the above, the check valve in the pump may be bad, allowing fuel to drain back into the tank. I've seen people add a check valve in-line after the pump as a cheap fix for that.

I did not notice any dark smoke, but I also have not been looking. I will take a better look in the AM when I start the car again

Just ordered one! I've never checked the pressure so I'd have to do a little more research on this. I'm sure the Manual will help once it comes in.
