Drain Box under Battery Tray ??

I was doing some cleanup work in my trunk today, 1987 325is, and I found a small square plastic box under the battery tray. It has a whole in the bottom that fits into the rubber grommett at the bottom of the well that drains to the outside and it had a small rubber hose attached to the top part of the box that's obviously a drain for something but the other end of the hose wasn't attached to anything. Does anyone know where the rubber hose is supposed to attach? Is this leftover as a drain that used to hook to a battery?

If that box is not connected to the battery, and the battery vents out liquid, does that aid corrosion and/or rust?

Shouldn't vent liquid, but gas from the battery does. And yes, it can help corrode that area. Make sure it's hooked up to your battery.
