This. It looks like heating deformation that occurred. The rubber hoses would have separated before that plastic polymer housing expanded.

Do the exhaust manifolds have heat shields attached? If pressure caused that to burst then I would think your heater core is busted too as well as the radiator. You better go through everything!

I'd say the superheated coolant heated the tank up to a point where its material became softer, then the pressure basically blew a bubble through it. Like we used to do with CD's and lighters, remember? =)

What I'm sayin is, it looks like both. Not either.
