    Exhaust heat shield ???

What would happen if I took off the heat sheild that is on the pipe between my cat. converter and the muffler? Will I fry anything?

This thing rattles like crazy on my car, sounds like it's about to fall apart when I start it.

My first E30 I bought didn't have it on it. Guess it was rattling and someone took it off. I never had any problems with it not being there.

Yeah same thing happend to me, they only come on some aftermarket cat's. I took some metal cutters and cut the heat shield off of the cat converter, and the rattling stopped. I dont think it does any harm, because it doesnt get hot to the point where it could melt through your chasis.

You are talking about the big long sheet metal heatshield that goes between the exhuast system and the driveshaft right?

Removing should have no ill effects other then what aerodynamic purpose it likely serves as well.

You could try gettin some hose clamps on it, or somehow bending it tighter so it doesn't rattle.
Or throw it in the trash

I'm pretty sure you can do without it. I know the Mad Scientist RedBaron doesn't have one. It would also make inspecting your driveshaft a much easier job.

I would think that is pretty negligible on a street car...or maybe even a track car (unless you go balls to the wall, in which case you'd have something blocking air from getting under the car anyway). The heatshields are crimped on so tight to the cat and pipe that they can't possibly do that much in terms of aerodynamics.

So people that run straight pipes are sacrificing a legit amount in terms of aerodynamics?

Jordan is refering to the heat shield attached to the underside of the car. Between the center section and the driveline. Not the individual heatshielding wrapped around the catalytic converters.

Oh, whoops. Yeah, your driveshaft would get banged up purty good too.
