1987 325is. Just picked this thing up. It's been leaking LOTS of powersteering fluid only from the passenger side & what looks like right from the boot. Leaks right at the passenger side rack boot. Sometimes it wont leak at all, then sometimes it will just dump fluid out. It's on & off. One day it wont leak at all. Then today after I parked it, it leaked out a bunch. I should get it up on my hoist, clean the boot off & see if just the boot has a hole or something. Like I said, ONLY the passenger side right from the boot. Seal in the rack? Could it just be the boot?

The boot is just a dust cover for the inner ball joint and rack shaft. My guess is that the rack seal on that side is leaking and fluid collects in the boot and then dumps, which explains why you don't see the leak all the time. The fix is to replace the rack with a used unit, which is an iffy proposition or have the rack rebuilt. RackDoctor has a good reputation and reasonable prices. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
