    m42+ 2.93 diff?

Anyone try this, I'm curious how awful it is, nice on the highway though maybe...

this question.... in "general cosmetics"... are you drunk??

2.93 + m42 would be teh major suck in town. and silly even on the highway. 3.64 at the lowest I'd say.

I have a 293 on my m52, excellent mileage and alot better ride than a 410 if you put in some serious seat time. I can sell the 293, as I will be moving into the city and only using the car for weekend events/pleasure drives.

what tranny though, 2.93 is stock on the e36 328 tranny, so that throws off the comparison a bit.

do you like stupid high gas mileage? do you hate how the car tends to move foreward when you put your foot on the gas pedal?

if you answered "yes" to both those questions, then that rear end is for you.

Rob, after my 4.10 went south I put in a 3.25 since it was readily available. 3.25 barely worked, and 2.93 will be a very tough time and probably result in worse mileage, IMO.

The 3.25 could only see 5th on the highway on a decline. Level pavement would still require a good bit of throttle to maintain speed. So most of the time I found myself in 4th gear--close to the 4.10's 5th gear (4th = 1:1 = 3.25, 5th = .805 x4.1 = 3.30).

I think 2.93 would have you spend all your highway time in 4th. Don't know if the 318 engine could turn over that sort of a 5th gear that long.

                  My $.02.
Try a 3.64 or 3.45 if you can get your hands on one.

                      didn't I say 3.64? =)

am I crazy or are there small case 3.73? go with that. not extremely noticeable change, but low r3vs for the highway. 3.91 if you come across one would be fine too.

make sure you have proper height tires as well. and new ignition shit, right oil, of course.

i get ~27mpg going the speed limit on the highway on a 3.73'ed 325i. for hour-long steady speed drives to school/auto-xes, it's marvelous!

I'm not sure if there is any gear differance in the the transmission but I had a 3.25 diff in my 535is and even with the m30 it had a hard time on big hills on the highway if you were going 60 or below. You really had to be going over 80 for it to be practical or for it to be saving you gas milage. I'm planning on useing the small case 4.10 with my m50 so I'm going to be even worse off.

                          thanks for the info stu(s)

you know, the gas price crunch, etc etc, plus the e30 is nothing more than transport now, i rarely drive it like it needs to be, so maybe a 3.73 or something. Or not, since i'm lazy
