s50 for 1200 was overreved have questions

so i came across and s50 with 48k on it but that was overreved. There are three damaged pistons, and some bent valves. First how much would it cost to have this running? Assuming worst possible scenario.....is there anything else that could potentially be wrong. Also if fixing the engine is reasonable is 1200 a resonable price? I think i'd most likely offer less. Its located in philly so i figured i'd atleast find out if it would be worth fixing and installing in my ix  which has been done a few times :)

do you know the true extent of the damages? I mean have you seen pictures of the engine opened up? How much was it overrevved?

i dont know of any transmissions (there might be some) that have a gear lock-out based on the speed of the car.

sequentials, automatics. Camaros/vettes/firebirds have a 'skip-shift' feature that will make the manual transmission shift from 1-4 if you dont rev high enough.

Run away. There is no room to machine the head on those motors, so unless the damage is very light (which I doubt it is) It'll need a new head anyways. Just find a running one.

jordan- no pics i just emailed the guy to ask, to be honest it sounds pretty bad, i'll ask for pics for the hell of it

The only reason i considered it was because it was close by and cheap (kinda) I'll post the pictures if i can get any. I'll probably just do the 2.8 i have some parts for it already.

The benefit i see to the engine swap aside from power is the gas mileage. my dads 525i with m50 gets like 26 mpg (drives like an old woman). My ix gets about 20 max. Anyway i drove our 325is for a week pretty hard and it still got 24-25. I am just not sure i wanna make the commitment to swappin into the ix as its gauranteed to be a PITA

I think its pretty common for that to happen to E36 M3s. I remember reading that it usually happens when people not used to the car are driving it hard and do a quick downshift from 5th to 4th, only it goes into 2nd.

                    Ouch.

Indeed, reaching for 3rd but getting 1st is common too.

It isnt so much driver error, as motor/tranny mounts. If you have a high lateral load on the engine/tranny the mounts will allow it to move x degrees. Thus moving your shift pattern somewhat as well.

My friend Max was hauling ass after a friend of mine and did a "money shift" from 4th to 3rd while reaching for 5th in the neighborhood of 130mph. The outcome was a new valvetrain, and pretty much every exhaust valve was bent. Hey, he got an M3 valvetrain in his M50 out of it... his car is now one of the fastest E36s I've seen.

friend of mine in his turbo honda pulled a money shift a long time ago. fortunitally he pushed the clutch back in fast enough to keep the motor alive. i cant remember the details but i could swear he said the VAFC told him he was at 8750 for a split second. the r3v limiter at the time was 7k.

Once upon a time back in the Jetta I was going for a top speed picture.

I asked my friend to select 5th for me

                              He put it in 3rd

                              I let the clutch out

                              I caught it in time

                              computer recorded 8100rpm overrev (6425limiter)
