WONT RUN AT RIGHT Op Temp!!!

Okay so the average temperature my car runs at is just a bit over 1/8 and that's after I've been driving it for a while. Heat barley works at that temp. But if I let the car sit for Long the temperature rises but will eventually overheat. Once I let the car sit it rises to normal operating temperature (half way) and I go to driving as soon as I get on the gas you can see the temp gauge start to fall back down to the 1/8 mark. I've gotten the water pump and the thermostat changed when I got my new m42. The old one had the same problem. It sounds like a stuck open thermostat but how is that possible?? Help .__.

Tstats and temp gauges are notoriously unreliable. I'd boil it and see what temp it opens at and make sure your heater core is getting enough circulation.

Are you sure you have the right tstat? Yours might be a 70 tstat making the car running much cooler. It might be that the car was overheating before and the previous owner put in a cooler tstat.

+1 on check your t stat
+1 on check for other things causing the car to over heat (low coolant, failing water pump, leak, etc)

If it's fine driving, but heats up stopped, check your fan clutch too. Might not be sucking enough air through the radiator.

Mine was doing the same thing. Just changed my t stat and now everything works perfect. My old one was definitely toasted and it was the wrong temp anyways.

My biggest concern is why is runs so cold, so it the thermostat? Or at least it seems to be that from what you guys are telling me

I had a similar (ish) issue with my M42 E30.

Temp would rise up to past half way when I was stopped and even back out while moving. There wasn't much heat coming out of the vents either. I fixed both issues by bleeding the cooling system. I think I had air stuck in the heater core/matrix.

If you're running too cool while driving and too hot while not, my best guess would be a combo of the tstat being too low of a temp and the fan/clutch not drawing through enough air.
