i need a new one for my 1990 e30 325i... Where do I get the cheapest one that works well (names/compatibility)? Im also using R12, I dont want to convert to R134a. I'm not really an AC guy and havent really learned much about it. I've got the stock m20 and whatnot. Looking to spend as little as possible. Thanks!

Get a used one from someone parting out a car, that will be the cheapest.
There are several r12 replacements out there because r12 is no longer legal. Freeze12 and Duracool 12. I'm also pretty sure you can use propane or butane and that will be even more efficient, it's just fairly explosive. Haha.AWD > RWD

I recently put a completely new R-134 compressor in my partially factory 134a converted M42 car. I also replaced the receiver drier, pressure switch, and various seals/fittings. In future I'll replace the condenser with a parallel flow type to match, but not right now. Vac it down, charge it up, and all is well with the system.
Total cost thus far has been about $300. Adding the condenser and a new 134 expansion valve (already has a 134 unit) will bring the cost up another $120.
As far as parts, the compressor is Denso ($220), as was the stock one, and the other were of various makes, mostly along OE lines.
In any case I don't see how you'll be able to do the job inexpensively without a used compressor, which is iffy. However, RockAuto offers M20 compressors from $120 to 400+, based on what you have in the car, so there is a chance you can get away inexpensively.
