i swear im a lucky mofo. i pulled my e30 in the garage 2 days ago and smelled a little gas but thought nothing of it because i have all kinds of chemicals out for my 02 project. i didnt drive the car for 2 days and i backed it out today and dumped a gallon of fuel all over my garage. i ruptured a fuel line from a zip tie. when i did my conversion 4 years ago i replaced all the soft lines with new bmw fuel line. i zip tied 3 lines together down by the steering donut where it couldnt be seen. evidently it rubbed thru and was puking gas all over the place. im lucky it didnt go up in flames. im also lucky it happened in my driveway. i didnt think zip tying a fuel line could rub thru it.

Holy shit. I did not think that eather. What would a hose clap do though. Seems like they would be the same, I mean if a zip-tie did that, coulden't a hose clamp.Originally posted by cabriodster87"Honey? What color is this wire? Is it the same as that one? Are you sure? BMW hose clamps are rolled on the edges to prevent just that from happening. cheap hardware store clamps are not however..Comment

i really just zip tied the 3 fuel lines together to keep them off the steering donut. there wasnt a lot of pressure on them that i know of. they must have been rubbing together or something. but think about your car going up with that much fuel. there isnt shit you could do. fire extinguisher or not.Originally posted by nandoBMW hose clamps are rolled on the edges to prevent just that from happening. cheap hardware store clamps are not however..Comment

haha i know. thats why i hid them. ive never thought of my car as a hack job but normally zip ties are associated with hack jobsOriginally posted by T.Dot_E30The fuel lines shouldn't be moving that much to be rubbing against each other and cause that.
I've seen zip ties used on alot of hack jobs......didn't think anything of it.Comment

Blunt, I had the same thing happen about a year ago. I was heading to Charlotte at about midnight when I noticed I dumped about a 1/4 tank in a mile. Turned out the inlet line rubbed against the steering shaft enough to break through; pulled off the exit and had a friend come and help push the car to the gas station with me, and we were able to replace it the next day. I used zipties to keep the new fuel line suspended well above the steering shaft.
Glad you got it taken care of without problems.

Fixed it for you. That is unless you wanted the burst.Originally posted by 87-325icscary, i replaced one of those lines not too long ago, and they were all three loosely "zipped" together, i replaced the ziptie as well, keeping them together neatly, i hope it doesnt cause a burst!sigpicComment

yeah that just happend to me about ten minutes ago! i was pulling out of my driveway, got about 50 feet down my street and realized there was a trail of some liquid following me...stopped....opened the hood...gas was EVERYWHERE...immediately turned the car off...havent been able to get under it, hoping my friend can put it on his trailer and take it to the barn where rede30 and i work on our cars.Comment
