    m42 ICV interchangeability

can the e36 m42 ICV be used for the e30 m42? I have an e36 engine in my 318is, and i swapped over everything from my old e30 m42 (intake manifold, pulleys, valve cover, etc...) it's been running fine for over a year now.

I slowly noticed the idle started sucking and looked at the ICV, it's all seized up and the rotating piece inside looks like someone tried to use a screwdriver to help get it moving.

I have the ICV from the donor e36 however it's a different shape, but appears to have the same electrical connection. Any reason it wouldn't work if I routed the hoses properly?

It's a completely different shape, but with some fittings and a torch I think I can get the hoses modified to work.

It's certainly worth a try, and I believe they should be interchangeable outside of the straight through vs 90 degree offset difference. If you're still running stock vacuum hoses you might be able to chop the hose that runs from the VC to the ICV and keep it in nearly the same position, presuming there is space for the unit itself.

      I think so, too...

the only thing that could possibly go wrong is if the E36 is a drastically lower impedance-
just measure the resistance of each of them, and if they're close, you're golden.

        for anyone that's interested, it does indeed work - e36 m42 on e30 m42.

however the inlet/outlet port sizes are considerably bigger on the e36 icv, I took a torch to my existing hoses to bell them out a little to fit, when I get the time to go to an auto parts store I'll get all new hose of the correct diamter, and a few 90 degree fittings to make the routing more efficient
