    shifter bushings hassle

I started to replace my all of my shifter bushings yesterday but i ran into a problem. I removed the selector rod without a problem and them i went to flip up the clip on top of the transmission. I couldn't get to the clip so i figured i would remove the exhaust and then drop down the transmission slightly. Today i spent over 1 hour prying at the clip but it will not budge.

It is very frustrating because i know it should just flip right up. If anyone has any idea whats wrong please let me know. I really dont't know what too do. I could drop the whole transmission down but that is something i don't want to mess with.

you don't need to drop the whole tranny: that's more of a hassle. It's called the bitch clip for a reason. Just be persistent and you'll get it.

If you haven't already, unbolt the crossmember to give you enough room to get it up and out. I used a small screw driver to get in there and bend it up and out. It doesn't matter if you F it up.

im been using alot of force but the bitch still wont come up....i think im just going to spray it with pb blaster and let it sit tonight. I can get the screwdriver wedged under there easily but it just wont pry all the way up.

The first one I did took me an hour, the second one on an e36 m3 took about 30 seconds. Do you know what it looks like out of the car?

What I found works best, with the trans dropped slightly, get a tiny screwdriver, or something flat with a little bit of strength, and slide it on the inside of the clip from behind (engine side). Then get a bigger screwdriver and pry up as you keep the other in place, it will come off.

thats exactly what ive been doing...i use 2 screwdrivers but it feels like the clip is somehow jammed. I think im just going to remove the flex disc and drop the tranny down as far as it will go.

damn, you've got a stubborn one. I know you cant get very big screw drivers in there to get good leverage and pry it back very well, but thats the only suggestion I can offer since the harder you try to pry up from the top, the tigher that inner clip grabs the lip on the trans. Maybe if you drop the trans down some more; You can try popping the hood, and jack the motor up slightly to get more angle, maybe that will help get it down far enough to back in there better.

well i finally got the clip pryed up. It was a bitch and i bent the screwdriver trying to get it up. There were rocks and grit on the sides of the clip which was making it stick. Does anyone have any ideas of getting to the 13mm nut that is above the driveshaft. Im lazy and dont wanna remove my exhaust because im doing the work at my brothers on gravel!!!!! My back is killing me. The bushing in the joint feels very solid and looks like it is brand new. I think im just going to not change it.

really, after you do it the first time it's very easy.

The nut is easy to get off and you dont have to remove the exhaust. Just remove the headshield and lower the DS by undoing the center support bearing.

This should give you plenty of room to easily complete the task. You've got the bitch clip out; why not just finish the job?

i found the aboce to be true, plus mine actually broke, and it had checked out just a year ago. if you've got the part, might as well.

good to hear the clip came off.
