    Broke a bolt...

So today I was installing a different set of control arms, so I could get mine ready for new CAB's.

Reinstalling, I broke a bolt on the lollipop mount.

Sheared that bastard about 1/2" in.

Maybe I shouldn't have used my trusty old Snap-On 1/2" impact gun.

Anyway, I plan on using Heli-coil to do the repair.

Anyone ever have to do this repair?

    Luke

If by "ruin" you mean totally fucking detroy, then yes, I did.

I should mention that I fucked up WORSE by attempting to use a easy-out, but I drilled the hole poorly, then didn't notice that I shoved the easy out basically into the threads...then broke it off.

      Destruction...bad uglies.

Oh well. Gonna order that Heli-Coil tomorrow.

Damn, I pretty much did the same thing.
I went to my mechanic and he helped me drill it out more, then rethread it with a tap and used a new bolt with some loctite on it. Has lasted a while now without coming out or anything.

this mite be a better solution than a heli-coil...that would only be a temp. fix.

Wow, not too bad an idea. Stock size bolt, or something better?

Huh? Heli-Coli are tougher than the original threads!

I snapped a cross member bolt in to the frame, i drilled it out and tapped it for the next size up SS bolt and i now use copper slip on certain bolts to stop them seizing up.

Helicoils can be good though, they saved my exhaust manifold when i snapped a stud as i wanted to use the normal BMW SS stud.

Any 335er's out there don't use nut's to space out the studs in place of lost springs on your exhaust manifolds otherwise you will probobly suffer a snapped stud like me. It was only going to be a temp fix but i forgot to replace the springs, doh !

Oh yeah, they were invented in the 30's as an improvement for cast iron threads. Tough as shit, and they spread the load through all the threads instead of just the ends of the thread.

Reminds of one local guy that broke 2 lollipop bolts and 2 subframe bolts (swapping rack) while borrowing some tools and shop space from me. "Tighten it with the impact 'till she breaks." Easy outs saved the day.
