    318i with a bad attitude...

    Hello everyone,
I searched a few pages to see if anyone else had this prob, but nobody seemed to.
    What iv'e got is this:
    84' 318i m10
    The story:
Driving home the other night, i let off the gas at about 35mph and the revs kept dropping and the engine died. No weird noises or any sort of warning at all. I coast into a parking lot and try to re-fire, but it just sits there and cranks.
I thought fuel pump, so i got a tow home and put my spare fuel pump in. No dice.
Iv'e been all over the engine bay and inside the car looking for loose connections, thought I narrowed it down to a temp sensor. Replace temp sensor, temp sending unit as well as the cold start switch. Nothing. The car will start and run for several seconds (3 or 4) at a time, but then dies. I tested the maf, the air temp meter, the flapper door, the injectors, and everything seems to be acting normal. Anyone ever have this happen?? This car has been down for nearly a month now and I need it really bad!
    Thanks for any input!

No I didnt, but i was just working on it and everything seems to be correct but when we sprayed raw fuel down the intake, we could keep it running like that. I'll check the relay (the fuse is good). *I can hear the fuel pump cycle when i hit the key, does that mean the relay is good? I also used a jumper wire to power the pump, but it still wont fire w/out the fuel being sprayed manualy.

ok, the relay and fuse are good. I have 44psi at the fuel rail. I'm back to square one now though. How is the fuel system related to the temp sensor(s)?

The computer should control the ground side of the injectors which makes them pulse. Maybe the ECU is bad?

Thats kinda what I was thinking. Is the ecu grounded to the body? If so, if that ground was broken then the injectors wouldnt fire, correct? All assuming its grounded to the body.

                  Ecu!

-e- check for 12v +-2 at the injector electrical connectors when you crank it.

If I need an ecu, how do I tell what ecu I have and what I need? I hear guys talk about a "173 ecu" or something like that. What do I need?
                    Thanks!

you just need to find one with a matching part number. the p/n is on the side of the ecu thats facing down when mounted.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions and comments everyone!
