How to pop open hood if release wont open it?

Just as the title states, how do you get the thing open? My friend recently purchased a 318is and cant seem to get the hood open. It worked before he purchased the car, but now it seems the release wont work anymore. Maybe the cable is stretched, who knows. Is there a way around this?

use a screwdriver through the front grills, Stick it in the slot and copy the function of the cable by prying it.
Might need a flashlight
